The results of the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) councillor candidate surveys on sustainable development indicates the low priority that many candidates place on this critical issue. Questionnaire results demonstrate, that despite all the talk about sustainability, there is often a low level of understanding and an insufficient commitment to implement the required reforms to ensure sustainability becomes a reality.

As a family doctor and often Acting Government Medical Officer in Rockhampton in the 1950s I wrote a letter praising fluoridation published in the local "The Morning Bulletin". This prompted the late Jack Harding and others to show me books that warned of fluoridation risks. I read those books and have continued to look at reports for and against fluoridation in medical journals and elsewhere.
