West must ensure Palestine state, promote peace in Mideast
-DR. ABDUL RUFF
Palestinians currently have permanent observer entity status at the UN without voting power whereas the fascist Israel that has been imposed on Palestine by the western terrocracies is a full member with voting power and support from the west. The Palestinians are represented by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). A Council committee is considering a Palestinian application to become a UN member state and is expected to present its report next week.
Palestinians now want an upgrade so a state of Palestine has full member status at the UN as their legitimate right. They seek recognition on 1967 borders - in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza, although entire Jerusalem should be returned to them in view of their long sufferings at the terror hands of an arrogant and illegal regime called Israel in Mideast.
Since the notorious UNSC veto plays crucial role in admitting new members to UN, the besieged Palestinians have been trying to win support from USA and European states although these countries allow the Zionist criminals to go on rampage over Palestinians off and on. The “double” Americans have already made it clear they would veto the Palestinian request.
Britain and France, in fact all European colonial states, the traditional supporters of Zionism and fascism and attacking Arab nations for resources, support Palestinian statehood in principle but USA, which claimed being sincere mediator, is playing fowl game to destroy peace chances in Mideast. Now they have revised their opinion to express “concern” that a Palestinian bid to become a UN member state right now could harm chances of reviving the peace process. It seems, the UK, France and Colombia have in a private meeting of the Security Council told the members they would abstain in any vote on Palestinian membership. Germany also said it could not support the Palestinian bid, without clarifying whether it would abstain or vote against.
None of these countries, however, have officially confirmed this yet. Such a move, it articulated by pro-Israeli nations, could jeopardize essential Palestinian police training, with damaging effects on Israeli security. In political and moral terms the stated position of these western rouge states the Palestinians are made to worry.
As a pure gimmick to help prolong Israeli occupation and holocaust inside Palestine, USA and Europe push for an observer member status for Palestine without voting power. Even if enhanced observer member status could be an interim option but this bogus status, as recommended by pro-Israeli lobbyists, makes no sense to the Palestinians, much less to others.
USA has used the NATO links to bully the European monkeys to promote Zionism in Mideast. The whole idea is to force the Palestinians to accept the Zionist crimes as international law. It appeared the Palestine issue has isolated the Americans as the Palestinians are getting majority support on the Security Council.
Palatine has achieved a major victory by wining their bid for UNESCO.
Despite the US diplomacy of threat and intimidation, bolstered by threatening punitive action in the form of refusing further financial support for UNESCO, in an emotion-charged session at Unesco`s Paris headquarters, 107 states voted in favor of Palestine’s admission as against 14 nays, with 52 abstentions. The vote could pave the way for the Palestinian Authority’s admission to the world body’s other specialized agencies. The UN body’s membership will also enable the PA to ask Unesco to give world heritage status to Islamic and Christian holy sites in the occupied territories.
The admission of Palestine to membership in UNESCO is for so many reasons a step forward in the long march of the Palestinian people toward the dignity humans deserve. The crucial decision is a moral victory for the Palestinians ahead of the Security Council’s vote on the PLO (PA)’s application for full UN membership this month. Palestinians` full membership of Unesco constitutes a major political success for them and a bold decision on the part of the UN cultural organization. It forms part of a larger Palestinian push towards international recognition for Palestine as a nation-state.
Indeed, UNESCO has given a momentary respite to those who were completely disillusioned by what to expect from the UN or the system of states when it comes to Palestinian aspirations. Welcoming Palestine to UNESCO is a day of vindication for the Palestinian people upon the wider Palestinian tragedy and struggle, and a political victory for PLO leadership, but it is also a day when all of us should reflect, and seek to take further steps forward.
Those nations that, vulnerable to American pressure, voted against Palestinian admission as member to UNESCO are indeed degrading international morality and they go opposed to the aspirations to establish a global democracy by siding with global state terror organizations led by NATO.
Having failed to employ its manipulative triclomacy against Palestine, Israel called the UNESCO vote a “unilateral Palestinian maneuver” which will have no impact on ground realities. It was not entirely unexpected given the Zionist trends.
Feeling growingly nervous about the possibility of emergence of an independent Palestine even without US assistance, America announced it was canceling all funding to UNESCO. Calling the membership “premature”, the White House agreed with the Israeli claim that Unesco`s decision undermined the peace process.
Congress itself remains a bastion of pro-Israel sentiment, as witnessed by numerous recent threats to block $50m (£33m) in aid to the Palestinian Authority if it continues its pursuit of UN membership. USA offers overall 22 per cent of the organization's annual budget of $643m in 2010-11. The US was to make a payment of $60m to UNESCO this month, but that money will not be forthcoming because an American law forbids funding for any UN body that admits Palestine as a full member. This is not the first time that America is at odds with UNESCO. During the Cold War, Washington remained hostile to UNESCO for nearly two decades, because it believed the UN agency was pursuing aims that conflicted with its foreign policy goals.
Not for the first time, Congress seemed to go too far, even for the government of Israel. Republicans, involved in the Sept-11 hoax, are deadly anti-Palestine. Over the summer, more than 80 members of Congress, from both parties, visited Israel. Members have been falling over themselves to introduce supposedly pro-Israel legislation, including a resolution endorsing Israel's right to annex the West Bank - proposed by a Republican - and a move to cut off military aid to any country supporting the Palestinian bid for UN membership, sponsored by a Democrat.
Republican Bob Turner has successfully exploited Jewish anxieties over Obama's Middle East policy. The frontrunner, Texas Governor Rick Perry, blamed the president for encouraging the Palestinians to seek membership at the UN. He and others say the Obama policy in the Middle East is “naive, arrogant, misguided and dangerous”, "an unmitigated diplomatic disaster," etc. republicans see it as the culmination of President Obama's repeated efforts over three years to throw Israel under the bus. These are bold, incendiary claims, but the candidates clearly feel there is much to be gained from highlighting the president's alleged hostility to the state of Israel.
Such moves have been seen before, but the strength of the current pro-Israel climate on Capitol Hill clearly complicates Obama's job as he tries to navigate the mine-infested waters of Middle East diplomacy.
But Obama seems to be trying to outsmart the pro-Israeli Americans to get himself reelected to White House. Obama's speech at the UN on 22 September 2011 was welcomed by almost all major American Jewish organizations and billed in the media as his most pro-Israel yet. Despite Netanyahu’s complex, sometimes frosty relationship with the Obama White House, he remains a darling of Congress, receiving a rapturous reception in May, when he addressed a joint session. Members rose to their feet for three dozen standing ovations, the sort of treatment B Obama can only dream of.
With USA playing a usual vulture game, that looks unlikely now. There is also general concern here that a Palestinian confrontation with the Americans on this issue could ignite violence in the Middle East. Of course, USA can ignite trouble in Mideast as it has already done Libya, Syria, Egypt, and elsewhere.
It is not clear in what way Palestine’s UNESCO membership undermines what the White House said was “the international community’s shared goal of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East”.
Palestine needs peace. Only Palestinians can explain the pain of occupation and blockade or the endless anguish of refugee status and exile or the continual humiliations of discrimination and second class citizenship.
While trying to conceal the Zionist crimes, America is opposed to the PA`s full membership of the UN because it upholds the Israeli position that the two sides should have “direct talks”. However, even a cursory look at the history of the Middle East conflict over the last two decades shows that direct talks between the two sides have served to prolong the status quo and helped Israel build more settlements to alter the demographic character of the occupied territories.
Notwithstanding all western gimmicks, the Palestinians, however, have indicated that they are eager to bring the matter to a vote in the Council, possibly even if they do not have a majority. Israel has clanged on to the republican hopefuls for the presidency. For Republicans, this probably has as much to do with courting staunchly pro-Israel Christian conservatives as wooing Jewish voters. But recent events in New York suggested that Jewish voters are up for grabs too.
Israel pushes the USA to lose this much social capital on the global stage by standing up for its defiance of international law as in relation to rejecting the recommendations of the Goldstone Report or refusing to censure the expansion of its unlawful settlements or the collective punishment of Gaza, there is no longer much doubt that Israeli foreign policy is driven by domestic extremism that then successfully solicits Washington for ill-advised backing.
Why was the vote regrettable and premature? After all to work for the preservation of religious sacred sites within the halls of UNESCO is hardly subversive of global stability by any sane reckoning. And how can it be claimed that Palestine participation within the UN System 'undermines' the 'shared goal' of regional peace in the Middle East? Why USA should let Israel to dictate its instructions to CIA?
Obama unnecessarily links the Palestine issue with his reelection and Jews do not elect US president, though they have strong lobbyists in USA. Once Obama achieves the Palestine milestone he could outsmart all other candidates from both parties. After all, he has escalated terror wars, added more terror troops to Islamic world to kill Muslims, and more importantly he has invaded sovereign Libya, killed its poplar president Col. Qaddafi soon after his assassination of one Osama supposedly in Pakistan. Obama has introduced drone terrorism in Pakistan and Afghanistan. In fact Obama could boldly claim shipping of super fine oil from occupied Libya
The colonial powers boost Zionist regime and keep the Hamas-Fatah divide to continue while Fatah leader M. Abbas has been projected as the leader to negotiate with UN and others on a final Palestine settlement. In fact they try to take the unity momentum away from Palestine. But the continued divisions among Palestinians could encourage the USA to block the UN bid and therefore would not necessarily support their aspirations for UN full membership. US-Israel terror twins are eager to keep the divide intact just like the Sunni-Shii’a divide, featured by Saudi Arabia and Arab League, harming the genuine interests of Islam and Muslims. But can the Hamas and Fatah come together a unified nation at least after the UN offers its node to full membership?
The western colonial heritage or imperialistic agendas cannot be re-branded as positive credentials. American Mideast policy favoring Israel all in all now stands exposed and USA is isolated internationally! The Americans have lost their moral right to leadership in resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict but the USA continues to operate as the topmost willing enforcement agent imposing its will on the humanity. It is not necessary to wait until France and Britain or USA read the tea leaves accurately enough to realize that it is time for them to give up their permanent place at the UNSC in favor of Muslim world- there are 57 Muslim nations representing Islam.
Emergence of Palestine as a free sovereign nation would herald new positive era in Mideast and world wide. West therefore must ensure Palestine state, promote peace in Mideast!
